What makes a good duck hunting spot? Areas that are close to big water? Or will a small backwater in a river be good? I know scouting is best but where do I begin?

Drake, Welcome!! there are a couple things that a good spot must have to hold ducks, the first and biggest thing is safety. Ducks won't go to a spot anywhere that they don't feel safe in. Food is a big one, but not always, ducks can be at a spot for two reasons to feed, or to loaf or rest at. The best thing to do is scout, and scout a lot. Look for ducks at different times of the day, to see when they are using what spots. Hope this helps!!
Good Luck, Tanner Wildes

Do I just scout any body of water? Or are there specific areas to concentrate on. I know horicon and theresa marshes get pounded pretty hard

yes any place that you can hunt I would scout. I would start out with place that have shallow water with feed in it. You might not want to be hunting loafing or roosting area's. When ducks get shot at where they roost at they will more than likely move on to a new area. But if they feel safe at there roosting area, they will more than likely have a number of different feeding area's and will stick around an area longer. So I would look for shallows with good food in it. Check out any river, especially with shallow back area's, an area with a number of ponds, marshes, or even bigger lakes, just check out the shallow bays.
Hope this helps you out.
Thanks, Tanner Wildes
