I've been having alot of fun calling at mallards the last couple of weeks. I've been heading down to the river and various ponds, tucking in behind a tree and doing some blind calling. They are super responsive this time of year.
Last night I went down to the river and walked the trail, I didn't see any ducks at all. But I found a spot, gave a couple of quiet single quacks, and a few chuckles, and within 15-20 seconds three drakes came right down the pipe about 6 feet off of the water and passed 5 yards in front of me. Then I walked the opposite way, waited a few minutes and called some more, and they went right past again.
Last weekend I was in a parking lot and saw a drake in a pond about 75 yards away. I gave two quacks and it's head snapped around, then I gave a couple of chuckles that thing hopped off the water INSTANTLY and buzzed right in front of my windshield. Lol oh man I wish it were hunting season.
If you are driving or walking along and see a drake mallard sitting around call at it and you may be surprised at how responsive they are right now.
If you call them, they will come.

I did that to a drake and a hen in the harbor the other day. I started hitting it, they were sleeping, but instantly that drake jumped up started waddling down the pier, jumped I. The water and was staring me down, wondering g where that hen was at. He started getting pretty upset. Me and my buddy got a good kick out of it.

Yep, they will even leave a hen right now. This time of year they can't help themselves, they have to go look. It's a blast!

Got a surprise last night. I took an crappy old hen mallard decoy and put it in the Menomonee river, stood by a tree and started calling figuring I'd get a drake mallard to fly by or even drop in on the decoy. Called and waited off an on for about two minutes and all of the sudden a group of 8 woodies came whistling right down the pipe, two of them splashed down right in front of me then I got busted and they all took off.
In 40 years or so of walking up and down that river I have never once seen a wood duck. I knew they had to be back there but I'd never seen one.
