How did you guys who went out this weekend?
My dad and I went out, hunted all day Saturday, and Sunday morning. We spent our time scouting on Friday, and we found what we thought was a great spot. Saturday, we ended with a Drake Woodie, and a bonus goose, that was it. We did drop a hen ringer that dove on us and we lost it. We did see birds but not like past years, mostly woodies, a few mallards, and probably the most ringers I have ever seen on opening weekend, saw very few BWT and GWT, probably less than 50 the whole weekend.
On Sunday we did a bit better, got two drake woodies, and a hen Ringer.
It was a tough weekend, and I talked to the DNR who were checking bags, and everybody did the same both days they said, the most he checked was a group that had 8 birds, for 6 guys.
How did you guys do?

Can you say wood ducks!! My god I am so sick of shooting at those. Bastards fly like bats.

The teal that were here two weekends ago moved out, saw 2 teal all weekend, couple mallards, and lots of woodies.
We killed a 10 man limit of Mosquitos...... 2 guys we shot our wood ducks a mallard and the dog found someone else's teal in the rice when we were chasing a cripple. Sunday was a complete circus of people littered all over sky busting and sailing birds into heavy rice. We watched a group of two guys drop 15 wood ducks!! Bet they maybe found there 6. Saturday we went swimming, no I don't mean fall in, we actually got so hot we went for a swim.
Since the zone changes I am really tempted to not hunt the Mississippi opener. Literally everyone I talked to at the landing was from out of town. Very rude and stupid manners at The landings, leaving lights on and blinding anyone trying to pull in, as people are prepping boats to the side some d bag flying through the parking lot to back his boat up but then not have of prepped and block the launch, some stupid younger kids burning out in the parking lot cause they feel they were on a race. Needless to say some things were said to these young men, we were not rude but they needed to understand , I think dkmf was nicer than me as i was seemed to be in a smart arse mood, I found it hard to not say somthings.
Looking forward to the real opener... 2nd opener, I hope all the fair weather fans. Mainly the old timers at the meetings , were happy with the 80 degree temps that they argue so hard for each year with this early start hog wash.

Koonce, I totally agree with you, seems like nowadays a lot of 20 some year olds are just getting into duck hunting, probably from watching duck dynasty, getting a loan and buying a new duck boat with a surface drive, and not having a clue. We saw some on opening day, hunting 4 in a 16 foot boat, and when they went out they were yelling and hollering in the dark. I am getting the same as you, might not even hunt before second opener anymore, its too early and too many people out.

Well that sounds like a pretty crummy start to the season. I'm a little concerned about the opener down here because I ran into a lot of people scouting in our area for the first time and at least one of them said they would be there for opening day. The place is pretty crowded as it is. I just hope we get our usual spot. We're also going to have a new dog out for his first hunt and he's very young and not fully trained yet. I hope that doesn't cause too many issues.
At least the weather should be a little better this weekend. Highs on Sat of 50 and 58 on Sunday. I was out in the marsh Saturday thinking how hot it was and how it was probably going to be pretty slow for everyone who was out hunting.

We did very good. took the weekend before the opener to scout two full days and really dialed in on where the X was. Saturday we got a 4 man limit (16 mallards, 1 pintail, 1 wood duck, and 6 teal) We seen a ton of teal the first day.
sunday 4 man limit but took all day. (16 mallards, 2 black ducks, 1 wood duck, 5 teal)

Outlaw, Wow nice! Were you on the Mississippi opener or the northern opener?

With out even asking I know it was northern zone. Lol. If my buddy with the goose camp up north didn't have to work we would have went to his place and prob hammered the mallards. I love the north zone, private marsh pockets, more fields and flooded sheet water chances, lots of gems where you don't have to deal with the zoo of the river or heavy public areas. There was a very small slough at the end of one of the fields we early goose hunted and it was loaded with mallards transitioning in and out all morning.

Pretty typical opening weekend for us. We hit one spot on saturday, which is starting to become one of those public hunting land zoos everyone dreads. Every year there are more and more cars in the lot, and more and more hunters, and all the things that go along with that. Saw one guy rolling his gear out in a pink and white baby stroller with a brownish blanket thrown over it and his young son wearing a neon green/chartreuse raincoat. Lots of skybusting, and yelling, and calling at anything within 1000 yards etc.
We had a new dog out with us for his first hunt, which presented a few problems and kind of took our attention away from things now and then, but all in all that was a good experience. He doesn't know how to retrieve yet, but he rides well in the canoe and is doing pretty well obedience wise. We managed to kill 3 ducks and hit a fourth that circled then went down right in the spread of a group about 75-100 yards away and they finished it off. A gift from us to them.
Sunday we hit a different spot and managed to bag two hen woodies. We didn't see large amounts of birds, even in the distance, in either place.
All in all a good weekend, and pretty typical for us given what we have to work with. I was happy with my shot disciple, and the shots that I made. I can't wait to get back out.

Hopefully it will only get better. Your game straps came in handy for us last weekend.

I saw the pics! Very cool, thanks. They looked good all full of birds. Looks like you guys had a great day.
Next time I make some I am going to put another layer of braid over the top so they will be a little thicker and easier to carry. Thanks for field testing them!
