I want to hunt the Mississippi River this year. Know absolutely nothing about what pool number means or when is good time to go or where to go. Love to see pics and get advice and stuff!

The pool numbers are the pools above that numbered dam. Make sure when you go to check to see where the refuges are to make sure you don't hunt in them. What are you looking to target?

I'm looking for canvasbacks (obvious Mississippi target), ring necks, and just a good river hunt

All pools will produce Cans. Just gotta find some big water with some points. As for what time of year it varies a bit, but can are a calender duck and start to show up the end of Oct and usually peak numbers at the start of Nov. Go to the upper Mississippi wildlife refuge and look over the pool maps as well as the duck counts. All the info you seek is there, just gotta take the time to read it over and look at the maps.
