Just curious how many of you do well calling ducks. For me seems like calling isn't that well recieved until about the end of October for mallards. Early season I have tried a bunch of different calling, very subtle, just feeding calls or quacks and the ducks just don't respond until we start getting some good migrations coming through. Then it starts working well, and the later in the season the better for calling.
And I have tried calling wood ducks a lot and it seems like they work decoys the same way as if I haven't called at all.
I have also tried calling divers, and again like wood ducks it seems like they work the decoys the same as if I never called.
Just curious if you guys have had the same experience with calling ducks in Wisconsin.

For us it seems more every group that passes is different. I always try different things and try to show a variety of notes to see what works. One group may pass and not work and then next will dump hard on a call. If birds are working im not gonna blow them out of the hole but if they are flying past, heck there are already leaving so I sometimes throw just about all we can at them.
The whistle is one of our best calls for early season ducks. It helps to have another guy in the boat that can call and work off your notes or visa versa. Most guys I hear in the marsh suck at calling. Sound like my 5 year old. Get two or more guys that know whats going on and you can sound like a group of mallets having the best time.
divers I don't usually call at unless they started to work and left, or are starting to swing wider than closer.
As for woodies, I have honestly not targeted them for the last two season.
Local stale ducks are harder to work in my opinion but I have had some decent success running a cut down on them.
Ah snap works calls.... Ill finish my post later.

I can blow a call pretty good I'd say. I'm no competition caller by anymeans because that doesnt kill the ducks.

^ your right. You don't blow a call the same way as a mainstreet routine, but meat routines are different.
If you can blow in a contest you can do more than what it takes to call birds, and have a few tricks in the back pocket if the basic quack quack ticka ticka aint workn for ya.

ive hit the whistle and had woodies do a 180 and come right in feet down.
I know they come to the call. KY has a 5 day woodie season and it's usually pretty good to blow the call alot with the buzzing around.
